Best Video Games of 2011

You played them with obsessive zest in 2010, these games that consumed your life for a few weeks, months or at least all your free time after class or work. You played them in the dark, by the light of glow sticks, or candles for better concentration. Your pet went unfed and you missed your best friend's birthday because you were lost in the digital world. These are the best video games of 2010 as voted by that year's game buyers.

Pokemon HeartGold and Pokemon SoulSilver

It is no surprise that Nintendo titles held a chunk of the gaming market in 2010. Nintendo's Pokemon brand began fourteen years ago, and remains a powerful force in the market. Pokemon's HeartGold and SoulSilver were remakes of the original versions released a decade ago, but with additional features. HeartGold sold more strongly than SoulSilver version, though both well top selling items in 2010, with Nintendo shifting more than 8.4 million copies of these two games.

Mass Effect 2

The second in a trilogy, Mass Effect 2 was released in early 2010. It ran on the Xbox 360, Playstation, as well as PC, and sold over 1.6 million copies within six weeks of release. This futuristic role-playing game was developed by the Swedish video game giant EA and received excellent reviews.

Wii Sports


First released in late 2006, Wii Sports is now the best-selling game of all time, with over 67 million copies sold by the end of 2010. There are five main sports to choose from with tennis, bowling, boxing, golf and baseball. Players use the Wii remote and the Nunchuck to control their onscreen counterpart in movements that may mirror real-life movements, as if the players were really playing golf or swinging a tennis racket, for example. There are standard play, training, or multiple player modes available. Wii Sports comes bundled with Wii or as a standalone game.

God of War III


God of War III is the fifth instalment in a series of games developed by Sony Santa Monica. The series draw upon Greek mythology and was released to critical acclaim. The developers had toned down the graphical violence for fear of being refused classification in some regions, but the graphics remained intense and vivid. God of War III sold over a million copies in its first week and was one of the top performers in 2010.

Wii Fit Plus


Wii Fit Plus was released in 2010 as an expanded version of Wii Fit, which was released in 2008. This latest version included over new 20 activities and games, and other features not included in the first version, such as a calorie burning counter.

Final Fantasy XIII

The first Final Fantasy game was released in 1987 by Square Enix, and the franchise has sold over 97 million copies since. The latest version of this enormously successful series sold over 5.5 million copies worldwide. Its home country, Japan, proved to be the most popular market, with 1 million copies sold on the day of release.

Battlefield: Bad Company 2

This shooter/infantry soldier game by EA was the surprise hit of 2010. It sold over 4 million copies around the world only two months after its release.

Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Like Bad Company, Modern Warfare 2 is also a first person shooter game. Released in 2009, this was the top selling game of that year, and occupied second place for sales in 2010. To date, Modern Warfare 2 has sold over 14 million copies worldwide.


New Super Mario Bros. Wii

This classic game was the top selling game of 2010, with worldwide sales of 14.7 million copies. This new version of Super Mario Bros was the first to allow multiple players.
