Yahtzee is an often neglected game that most people have not even heard about. It's a simple game that requires the use of five dice, and a score card. You can play this game with your family and friends, and the game encourages social interaction. Once you learn the rules of the game, you will find that it's actually rather similar to a card game. Here is how the game is played.

First, you will need five dice, and a special Yahtzee score card to keep the scores. The five dice represents the numbers from 1 to 6. In each hand, a player will start by rolling all five dice. Each hand consists a total of three rolls. You may decide to roll up to three rolls, or you may decide to end a hand early if you have achieved the result that you want.

The goal for each hand is to achieve the best result in a poker hand. If you are already familiar with the rules of poker, you will find this game very easy to pick up. For example, having three similar numbers will give you a better score than just two similar numbers. That's where the second and third rolls come in. If, in the first roll, you are not satisfied with the result, you can choose to keep the dice with the numbers that you want, and roll the remaining dice. The numbers from the second and third roll will then combine with your existing numbers to give the final result. Get all five numbers to be similar and you have got a Yahtzee! This result is then recorded in the score card, and makes up part of your total score.

In a way, the score keeping for the Yahtzee game is similar to that of a bowling game. When you are pitting yourself against other players, you are trying to achieve the highest possible score in each and every hand. The player who ends up with the highest score wins the game. The rules are so simple that there is little chance for confusion to occur. Just make sure that all scores are kept properly as the game progresses.

There are commercial Yahtzee games available for sale in retails stores, or on the Internet. They come in different packaging, but the ground rules remain the same. Children may want to play a game of animal Yahtzee. The rules are the same, but the dice have animals on them. For teenagers and grown ups, perhaps a traditional game of Yahtzee will provide hours and hours of fun and excitement.
